How Factory Farms Are Killing Us

Big Ag has been pretty successful at spinning the truth about antibiotic resistant “super bugs” that are brewing on factory farms, but the reach of Big Ag apparently isn’t long enough to muzzle the Centers for Disease Control.

In a recently released report, studies now show that millions of humans are being infected each year and thousands are dying. The study notes that when factory farm animals are routinely given antibiotics they develop drug resistance in their digestive systems. Bacteria gets into the meat and of course in their waste, which is often sprayed as plant fertilizer on food crops, can harbor harmful bacteria that then get into crop foods.

The study notes: “Widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture has resulted in increased resistance in infections in humans.” Lawmakers don’t seem concerned. According to SFGate, a California newspaper: “The link between overuse of antibiotics in livestock and microbial resistance has been suspected since the 1960s, but Congress, at the behest of the pharmaceutical and livestock industries, has blocked efforts by the Food and Drug Administration to scale back their use.”

Earlier studies found that factory farm workers are testing positive for certain types of deadly bacteria, unknowingly carrying it around with them. This partially explains why illnesses caused by these bacteria are no longer confined to hospitals and nursing homes. It is ironic that the pharmacy industry, which is supposed to help keep us healthy, is actually making us sick.

It is getting harder to protect ourselves from the dangers of Big Ag and the pharmaceutical industry. Whatever food you buy, organic or not, wash it thoroughly and cook it thoroughly. If you eat meat, buy only from certified humane producers who do not routinely use antibiotics Sanitize cutting board and utensils, and wash your hands if you have handled raw meat.
